Indian Premier League season five has seen some extraordinary performances by the bowlers so far. It is a format designed to favour the batsmen and the previous four seasons turned out to be the batsmen dominating season. The tournament is in its last two weeks and it has been the most open completion so far. As many as seven teams are fighting for the place in the playoffs and it is mostly because of the efforts from various bowlers.

The biggest topic of discussion in this IPL has been all the last over and last ball finish. But, one thing that people are forgetting that it is the efforts of the bowlers that is taking the match to the last ball. It has not been easy work for the batsmen and most they will agree to it.

Taking wickets is extremely important in all formats but stopping the batsmen to score quick runs is equally important in T20 format. There has been instance that a bowler who has not picked a single wicket has won the match for his teams because of his economical bowling.

Let’s have a look at the bowlers who have been the best when it comes to bowling economically. (Only the bowlers who have bowled more than 20 overs have been taken into consideration)

Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders): He has been the best bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders and is one of the major reasons why KKR is leading the points table. Narine has been a revelation and no batsmen till now has been able to read him. Narine’s economy rate is 5.30, which is absolutely brilliant. He is also in the race for the purple cap; KKR will be hoping that Narine can carry on with his good form.

Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians): No surprise here, Malinga is the best bowler in the world in T20 cricket and he has showed why. Malinga is the current holder of the purple cap and the best thing about him is that he is taking the wickets at a very good economy rate. Malinga has conceded runs at an economy rate of only 5.36.

Ankit Sharma (Deccan Chargers): No one expected him to make it to the list, but he has bowled well to get it in the list of the most economical bowlers. He beat the more experienced Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra in terms of the pace at which he concedes runs. He has been very effective with his slower balls and batsmen have found it hard to hit him. He has conceded runs at an impressive economy rate of 6.41.

R Ashwin (Chennai Super Kings): He has been one of the best bowlers in the history of IPL and he has been effective in this season as well. He has been struggling to pick wickets and has only managed four wickets so far, but his economy rate has been good. Batsmen always find it difficult to get Ashwin away and that reflects in his economy rate which is 6.43.

Muttiah Muralitharan (Royal Challengers Bangalore): Murali has not played all the matches for RCB and the only reason is that the other international spinner in the side is the skipper of RCB. Murali has been troubling batsmen from the past two decades and IPL-5 has not been different. Murali has got eight wickets from the five matches that he has played in and his economy rate of 6.5 is very good.

Here are a couple of facts to consider as you plan your next vacation:

American households expect to spend about $1,200 per person on summer vacations, according to a just released American Express survey.

Assuming a median household income of roughly $50,000 a year and an average household size of two to three people, that translates to an estimate of 5% to 7% of income going toward vacations.

This is a rough estimate at best. Some people will spend more, others much less. And given the still lofty unemployment rate, Im sure many people arent taking any vacation at all.

Even though you can easily view average spending in mind-numbing detail for all sorts of things (although not vacations) in the Department of Labors Consumer Expenditures Survey, that doesnt mean you should take your cues from what other folks do or dont spend.

Just because your fellow citizens spend a certain amount on a given product or service doesnt mean its financially responsible to do so. After rebounding to more than 6% during the financial crisis, the US savings rate has sunk to just below 4%. Thats better than the average level of about 1.6% in 2005. But its still low enough to make a case that Americans should consider reining in their spending in any number of areas so they can save more for their financial security.

Theres an even more compelling reason you shouldnt let other peoples spending habits dictate your own. Our spending reflects our priorities. We have a finite amount of money, so the way we dole it out amounts to a personal ranking of how important we consider various things. And what sits at or near the top of someone elses hierarchy, may not deserve as lofty a spot in yours.

Take me. I couldnt care less about fashion, so I spend very little on clothing. On the other hand, every year I go on StubHub, hold my nose and splurge on a couple of tickets to an Iggles game so my son and I can enjoy an afternoon of football and cheesesteaks in my native city of Philadelphia.

It doesnt really matter how your spending breaks down. If you prefer to overspend in one or two areas that are especially important to you, thats fine, as long as you hold the line somewhere else and dont lose control of your spending overall. What counts is that you set aside enough income for saving.

SALISBURY Not too many kids would let their mothers throw a plastic badminton birdie at their heads. But for the sake of raising money, Alden Roseman did just that.

Alden and his mother, Pam, were one of about six teams to compete in HeartChase, an American Heart Association fundraising event that takes teams through fun obstacles.

The event, which was held Saturday along Easy Street and the Famp;M Trolley Barn, is a pilot event. But its expected to return to Salisbury next year.

Salisbury was selected as one of 50 cities in the US and one of only two in the state to launch the interactive fundraising event. The other North Carolina city to participate was Clayton on April 28.

The event is a community event that provides participants, through obstacles and puzzles, a fun way to promote healthy living and support a cause at the same time.

HeartChase is like Amazing Race mixed in with the NBC show Minute To Win It.

All of the donations go to support research for the Heart Association, said Denise Young, director of the mid-Atlantic area.

The Heart Association looked for a way to be involved with smaller communities, Young said.

The organization looked for communities with populations between 25,000 and 45,000.

The Rosemans participated in the Bucket Birdies where Pam had to toss birdies into a bucket strapped to a hard hat.

One of the obstacles that seemed to give the teams the most trouble was Paver Dominoes, where competitors take bricks, donated from Johnson Concrete, stack them up and knock them down. All of the obstacles were timed.

Pam Aldens was the team with the most points at 8,690.

Pam said she heard about the event from Salisbury photographer Holly Czuba.

It was fun, Pam said.

She said the goal was to map out a strategy just before each obstacle.

They admit they were at an advantage with one event: Circulation. A hula-hoop had to pass through a ring of teammates and foam noodles without breaking the chain. Since the Rosemans made a two-person team they didnt have to pass the hoop that far.

Larger teams took longer to make a complete rotation.

Troy Dibley, who competed alongside parents Carolyn and Niven Bayer, said they were just there to have fun.

The team played to Nivens strengths, Dibley said. Niven is a general contractor and analytical thinker. He came in handy when the team competed in the Hydrate obstacle, where water had to be taken from one container and put into a bucket using household objects.

Niven came up with the idea to use a sponge and toss it back to Dibley instead of walking back to the other container.

He knew we were excellent players and freakishly competitive, Carolyn said laughing.

She said the event had an amazing theme and was educational, but in a fun way.

Its a lot more hands-on, Dibley said.

The team that came in with the fastest time was the Titans from Asheboro who finished in 54 minutes.

The team, made up of, Alex Haithcock, Lori Miklaszewski, Victoria Hayes, Morgan Kinney and her mother, Julie Kinney.

The team heard about the event from Miklaszewski, a physical education teacher, who coordinated a Jump Rope for Heart, another American Heart Association event.

She wanted to get her students involved, Miklaszewski said.

Its something new and it sounded like fun, Julie Kinney said.

The event raised more than $8,000 with the money going to support research for the American Heart Association.

Lead sponsor for the event was Rowan Regional Medical Center with Famp;M Bank and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College as presenting sponsors.

There were also businesses that sponsored a checkpoint or obstacle station that included Chick-fil-A, Johnson Concrete, RCCC and Tilley Harley-Davidson.

The event included lunch provided by Jack Moore of Blowin Smoke BBQ Sauce.

Several other businesses donated raffle prizes and gift baskets.

Visit www.heartchase. org or the American Heart Association at www.heart.org for more information about HeartChase.

CORNING — The Corning Community YMCA showed local families that being healthy can also be fun through its second Healthy Lifestyles Expo/Healthy Kids Day on Saturday.

The free event included demonstrations of YMCA fitness programs such as Zumba and yoga, dance performances by members of Filippettis Academy of Dance Arts, tours of a fire truck and a demonstration of fire-safety evacuation procedures. The Corning Police Department also offered free bicycle helmets for kids, as well as free car seat safety checks.

(The expo) embodies everything with health and wellness, said YMCA Administrative Coordinator Kristen Morse, citing the array of information and activities available for all ages.

Morse, of Corning, estimated that around 1,000 people passed through the Expo.

Each year it only seems to grow, Morse said, adding that this years event was three times bigger than 2011, the inaugural event. It took a lot of hands to put this together beyond the staff at the Y.

Families were able to visit dozens of booths set up by medical professionals such as Arnot Health, Hands on Chiropractic, Smith Allergy and Asthma Specialists, AIM, Painted Post Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Maria Marzo and more. Arnot Health, Wegmans and others also demonstrated how healthy eating can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Karen Immerman, an occupational therapist demonstrating at the Arnot Health booth, entertained children by showing them that being healthy can be as simple as swinging or jumping through a hula hoop.

A good therapist always makes it fun, Immerman said. When children see physical education, they engage in physical education.

In the last few years we have witnessed a huge upturn in awareness and increased popularity in underfloor heating (UFH). As a result, sales have increased throughout the last five years as people have become more knowledgeable of the advantages to installing such a system in their homes and the ease with which this new heating configuration can be deployed nowadays.

UFH offers economical, comfy, very discreet home heating within millions of residences all over Europe which is why it is quickly transforming into a preferred home heating choice in the United Kingdom.

This heating system is also being embraced by designers and specifiers who are aiming to comply with brand new, more restrictive energy efficiency regulations, and as such underfloor heating is beginning to play an ever more significant role in this regard. This race to become more energy efficient and to reduce our carbon footprint has become a key driver for the rise in UFH sales, particularly within the new build sectors as requirements for low carbon levels is being introduced and legislation being modernised.

Although this is great news, there is expected to be the potential to massively grow the sales of underfloor heating systems further still over the next 10 years. This is due to the fact that many countries around the world have started to take global warming much more seriously and are becoming more committed to striving for a carbon neutral state.

In an effort to do so, governments are going to continue to revise environmental legislations, within their own countries, so that all new build projects are forced to use only the most cost effective and environmentally friendly technologies available. This is great as it will encourage development of newer technologies within these areas thus making these heating systems even more efficient, reliable and affordable.

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, and the US Army found that a group of workers who were cut off from office email use for five days experienced more natural, variable heart rates and switched between computer windows only half as much.

Study co-author Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at the university, said the findings could help boost productivity in offices that choose to implement these email vacations, either by controlling email login times, batching messages or through other strategies.

We were surprised by the results, because they didnt have to turn out this way, Mark said. Its possible that people might have been even more stressed not to have email, to feel like they were missing out on something, so we didnt expect that people would become significantly less stressed.

Mark and her colleagues presented the study this week at a meeting of the Association for Computing Machinery, in Austin, Texas. Research presented at scientific conferences is considered preliminary and has not been peer-reviewed.

Thirteen civilian employees at the Armys Natick Soldier Systems Center, near Boston, took part in a three-day baseline data-collection phase, including interviews about their existing multitasking and email usage, and a five-day no-email period. All participants, who were split between men and women, were information workers whose job titles included chemical engineer, psychologist, materials scientist, biologist, food technologist and research administrator.

Co-workers who continued reading emails switched screens twice as often — an average of 37 times per hour compared with 18 for vacationers — and were in a steady high-alert state, with more constant heart rates, while those removed from email had more natural, variable heart rates, according to the study. They reported feeling better able to do their jobs and stay on task, with fewer stressful and time-wasting interruptions.

While the study focused on email . . . it really got at some important issues such as multitasking, focus and being present at what we do on a day-to-day basis, said David Ballard, head of the American Psychological Associations Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program. It really highlights the importance of people not trying to do so many things at one time and being present at what they do.

Despite the small number of participants, the results were robust, researcher Mark said, and the only downside participants reported was feeling somewhat isolated — though they were able to gather certain necessary information face to face from colleagues who did have email access.

Ballard said he has heard of some employers considering email blackout periods to benefit employees, but acknowledged that the concept is a real challenge.

The challenge here is that they would need to build some flexibility into the process, he said. People like to work in different ways . . . not a one-size-fits-all approach.

I think as we focus on flexibility in the workplace and flexible work arrangements that its harder to implement an across-the-board solution like that, Ballard added. We know from research that when employees have less control, it actually affects their performance as well. It could actually increase their stress level.

Mark said shed like her future research to focus on how digital technology affects offline relationships, not just in the workplace.

People are so consumed with technology, its 24/7, she said. I think the current younger generation interacts very differently than the older generation. Id like to know the effect on interpersonal skills.
